The lift taking customers up to South Kesteven District Council’s theatre and cinema in Stamford is to be replaced after repairs were ruled out on safety grounds.
The engineering work is expected to last around three weeks from Monday 16th September.
It will bring £40,000 of improvements for theatregoers who will be able to operate it for themselves rather than being accompanied as before.
SKDC Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, Cllr Paul Stokes, said: “Stamford Arts Centre is an important hub for all those who love theatre, music, poetry and movies.
“The existing lift had been in situ for many years and more recently has been out of service completely, for customer safety, while we looked at the potential for a temporary repair.
“However, this proved impossible so we are investing in a bespoke fitted lift for our beautiful listed building, which needed listed building permissions to be granted.
“We fully understand the importance of the lift to customers, and we are deeply sorry for the length of time it is taking to open up access to the theatre; however this is now moving forward and we are pleased that those with access requirements will soon be able to use it again.
“Those who used the old lift had to be accompanied by staff to operate it, and another benefit of this work is that its replacement can be operated independently by those that need to use it.”
As well as securing Listed Building Consent, the work also requires preparation such as the safe removal of an asbestos ceiling for new hydraulics, removal of a radiator for new control panels, and concrete added to build up the space where the lift sits.
While the lift is closed, access to the theatre for live events and cinema screenings will be via the stairs only. Customers unsure about accessibility are asked to call the box office directly for advice on 01780 763203.
27, St Mary's Street is a Grade II Listed Building, constructed in 1671. The current theatre was officially opened in 1978 by HRH the Duchess of Gloucester. following a £75,000 renovation.
