Parking at the South Kesteven District Council-run Swinegate Car Park in Grantham will change from next week to allow builders to make progress on the 20-home council house development.
SKDC’s contractor Lindum is building the one- and two-bedroom flats on 700sqm of disused land and part of the car park in the heart of Grantham.
But from 22nd April, the Swinegate access will be closed to allow demolition and then building work due to start on 29th April. Entry and exit will be from Watergate. The work, due to last until spring, 2025, will result in the loss of some spaces at the short stay car park, reducing to 44.
Additional short stay SKDC car parking is available nearby at Guildhall Street and Wharf Road, with long stay spaces at Welham Street and Conduit Lane.
The new properties will be for those in need of somewhere to live, from the SKDC Housing Register.
An SKDC spokesperson said: “We apologise for any inconvenience this part closure may cause while we get this important building project moving, but rest assured there are many suitable alternatives within walking distance.
“We are keen to keep disruption to a minimum during the project and hope that drivers will soon get used to these changes.
“When the flats are complete, there will be a loss of 16 public parking spaces, which we believe will be mitigated by the new provision of housing to suit the needs of those who need it the most.”
The development follows wide public consultation including Lincolnshire County Council Highways, heritage and conservation organisations, St Wulfram’s Church and public displays.
The new properties, which reflect the Georgian character of Swinegate, are designed to be inclusive, accessible, adaptable, energy efficient, sustainable and good value.
