Poppy cascades take shape for Remembrance

Colourful poppy fall cascades are taking shape for November’s Remembrance commemorations in Grantham – with a boost from the Army.

Lt Col Diane Youngman and Sgt Mark Conway from Prince William of Gloucester Barracks joined volunteers and Grantham College art and design students at one of four workshops held in the museum.

They helped stitch poppies for the two cascades to be installed either side of the Guildhall entrance for Remembrance commemorations and met art and design students creating new silhouettes as part of the art installation.

The project involves making 1,000 poppies sewn onto camouflage netting draped as a backdrop for the silhouette figures.

The silhouettes – a WWII paratrooper, a WWI Tommy, a naval Wren and a land girl – are all being decorated with artwork.

Grantham Arts is delivering the project for South Kesteven District Council, creating a new backdrop for St Peter’s Hill Remembrance Garden and the Remembrance salute from the Guildhall.

The installation will remain in place during Remembrance Week.
