South Kesteven District Council is calling on residents across the District to make positive lifestyle changes and kickstart their fitness journeys.
The Council is supporting National Fitness Week on Wednesday 18th September with a reminder that physical activity can be fun and that everyone of all ages and abilities can get active.
The 2024 theme, ‘Find Your Fit’, promotes the diverse ways that people can engage in a physical activity that suits their preferences and lifestyle.
Cllr Paul Stokes, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, said: “In line with our ambitions set out in the recently refreshed Corporate Plan, SKDC is committed to supporting healthy lifestyles and reducing health inequalities by encouraging sport and physical activity.
“National Fitness Day is a fantastic opportunity to do just that and encourage residents across South Kesteven and beyond to take small and achievable steps towards a healthier lifestyle.
“Whether it is using local leisure centre facilities, enjoying the many green spaces in our District or taking part in at-home workouts, there is an activity that works for everyone.”
Working alongside Active Lincolnshire’s Let’s Move Lincolnshire campaign, the Council is promoting a range of free and affordable activities suitable for all ages and abilities.
Let’s Move Lincolnshire’s Activity Finder lets residents from across the county search for a local activity near them. It is available for free online by visiting: https://letsmovelincolnshire.com/find-activities/
A number of free classes, swimming lessons and activities will be offered in the Council’s leisure facilities in Bourne, Grantham and Stamford. Details of how to access the free sessions is available online at: www.leisuresk.co.uk
Studies show that people who regularly exercise have a lower risk of developing many long-term health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer or having a stroke.
It can also improve sleep quality and energy, reduce stress and depression and improve physical and mental wellbeing. Exercise is also a great way to make new friends across the District.
Beth Goodman, the Council’s Physical Activity and Wellbeing Lead, said: “It seems obvious to be physical activity, but it is essential to be able to live a healthy and fulfilling life as we grow older.
“It is recommended that adults complete 150 minutes of moderate activity, or 75 minutes of vigorous activity, each week. This can be achieved by walking to work, gardening, going for a bike ride or even dancing.
The key is finding something you enjoy doing.
“Don’t wait to make exercise a new year’s resolution, get started by taking part in National Fitness Day this year.”
